The Boys (hardback edition, few marks on cover) by Laurie Ace and Jenny Loulie

A wonderful story about 4 boys who play together and how their friendship develops and grows as they get older.

Great diverse role modelling of what it means to be a boy/man.

Rubys's Worry by Tom Percival

In his trade mark style author/illustrator makes stunning use of contrasting black and white and colour to communicate about how the girls worries grow. This story gentle shows the reader that one of the best ways to deal with worries is to share them, then they don't feel as big anymore.

The Perfect Shelter by Clare Helen Welsh and Asa Gillant

At first, nobody knew. It seemed like the perfect day, the perfect weather to build a shelter in the woods. But then they told me my sister was sick.

With gentle, lyrical text by Clare Helen Welsh, this book is the perfect story to explore difficult emotions surrounding family illness. Sensitively tackling an unnamed but serious illness, this heart-warming picture book tackles a difficult subject with empathy and care. As is all great stories there is space for the reader to quietly take in the different emotions/situation, but also offers potential to discuss it further with a loved one if they want to. It could useful to child who is adjusting to a sibling with special needs and/or family member with Long Covid.

The artwork by Asa Gilland is stunning, and brilliantly captures the characters changing emotions and the mood too. A great author and illustrator pairing.
