Evereset: Reaching the Roof the World by David Long
“David Long has a real skill at brining to life some of the most extreme locations on earth, so feel like you are actually there.” “An eye-opening insight into this awesome mountain and the many attempts made to climb it, often through dangerous conditions”
In Everest you learn about the world’s highest mountain, set within the Himalaya’s on the border between Tibet and Nepal. It’s size is clearly explained with useful reference points and diagrams, so you get a sense of just how big this mountain is, and why is is also know as the “roof of the world”.
You learn about the first attempts to climb the mountain by British Explorers and how in the 1930s it became an international race to be the first to climb the world’s highest mountain. Who the Sherpa’s are and their important role in carrying equipment for those attempting to reach the summit. Then David Long talks you through how an organised expedition by Colonel John Hunt, overcame logistical and weather challenges. In May 1953 two members of this expedition Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay were the first people to summit Everest.
