Stepping into chapter books

When children are 6 to 9 years old it can be be tricky to keep them engaged and interested in reading. As I discovered with my own two children, even a 7 year old who has enjoyed reading can quickly start to loose interest if they do not find books that are right for them. Many parents, grandparents and teachers talk about how if is often difficult to find a good variety of stories for this age group. Yet if you know where to look and what you are looking for, there are plenty of wonderful stories to engage all sorts of readers.

The quality of books of books for 6 to 9 years that has been published in the last few years is amazing. However, experience has taught me that not all books or series for this age group are equal.  There are some stories that are more likely to appeal to a wide range of readers, and some which will open doors to middle grade fiction in the future.  Please find an up-dated selection of books, most of which are part of a series. to help every child become a readers who can read and wants to read for pleasure.

Historical Fiction and Poetry

Poetry – Keeping emerging readers reading is important to developing the skill of reading.

Historical Fiction – The potential for historical fiction to hook a child or young person into reading is sometimes overlooked.  Historical stories, and especially ones that involve some sort of adventure can be a great way to get a child reading. Check out some accessible historical fiction stories in the picture below. I am also happy to recommend some middl-grade historical fiction.

Barrington and Stoke – Publish a great selection of dyslexic friendly short reads. Which are also perfect for introducing any developing reader to a new author or genre.
